Manual Handling at Work

One of the most common causes of injury at work is incorrect manual handling. It can cause Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) which account for more than a third of all workplace injuries. Common questions regarding manual lifting at work include:

Are there any weight limits on manual lifting?
The law does not specify a safe maximum weight limit. Instead it places a duty on employers to manage or control risk. The measures an employer must take to meet this duty will vary depending on the circumstances. For instance, the employer should consider the strength and fitness of the employee and the weight of the load and distance to be carried.

Should I take a manual handling training course and what will it involve?
Manual handling training courses should involve learning about manual handling risk factors and how to avoid injuries along with how to safely manually handle goods and the use of mechanical aids. Although training can be important in reducing the risk of injury at work, employers should supplement this with monitoring and reviews of procedures to guarantee that practice is safe.

Does a 'no lifting' policy exist?
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) do not exclude individual types of manual handling or endorse 'no lifting' policies. Manual handling should be limited to circumstances where it cannot be avoided and only where the risk has been assessed and minimised.

How can I avoid injury when manual handling?
When manually handling goods, there are ways in which you can reduce the risk of injury, such as:
  • Make the load smaller;
  • Make the load easier to lift;
  • If possible, change the way that the work is arranged to cut down the distance it has to be carried and to reduce the amount of twisting or lifting;
  • Ask your employer to make changes to your work area, e.g. more even flooring to make lifting easier;
  • Make sure you have the right training.

  1. Manual handling at workplace injuries generally occur in construction industry, factories and warehouses etc. but accidents due to manual handling can occur at any workplace, so it is necessary that all of us should take measures in advance to avoid such accidents. Manual handling accidents happen because the load or objects are not properly handled. Whether you are an employee or an employer it is necessary that everyone should follow their responsibilities. An employer needs to provide a safe workplace by reducing the risks associated with manual handling of goods, proper training to employees, for heavy loads mechanical equipments should be provided. An employee should follow the right procedure to handle the goods and follow the procedure that is implemented for their safety, inform the employer of any dangerous issues if it exists. A workplace that follows these things will definitely have reduced risks associated with injuries due to manual handling.
